A little after sunrise, I heard my neighbor’s front door open.
He stepped outside.
At first, everything appeared normal.
Then he looked toward his SUV.
He stopped.
I watched his expression change.
Confusion.
Then disbelief.
Then frustration.
He stood there staring at the lawn for several seconds.
Finally, he turned toward my house.
I took another sip of coffee.
He walked toward the SUV.
Then he stopped again.
Whatever he had expected to see that morning, this clearly wasn’t it.
He looked around.
He checked the vehicle.
He looked at the ground.
Then he looked back toward my house.
I opened the front door and stepped outside.
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Then he called out.
“What did you do?”
I smiled.
“Nothing to your car.”
He looked irritated.
“Then what is all this?”
I pointed toward the lawn.
“You said it was just a little grass.”
He didn’t answer.
I continued.
“You also said you wouldn’t do it again.”
