I picked up my grandson wearing a floral sweater. I waved at him, and he turned away and walked off. Later, he told me he was embarrassed by me. That same day, I called the bank and stopped paying his tuition. A week later, I saw his mom and to my shock, she…

Was I Being Petty?

That question haunted me immediately.

Was I punishing a teenager for being immature?

Was I allowing one hurtful comment to erase years of love?

Should I have simply ignored it?

Maybe.

Maybe I should have had another conversation.

Maybe Daniel was dealing with peer pressure.

Maybe he was insecure.

Maybe he regretted what he’d said the moment the words left his mouth.

Teenagers say things they don’t always mean.

I knew that.

But I also knew something else.

The tuition wasn’t a right.

It was a gift.

And gifts come with the freedom to decide whether you want to continue giving them.

I wasn’t taking away his education.

There were other ways for him and his mother to handle the cost.

I was simply deciding that I would no longer quietly finance a relationship in which I was treated as an embarrassment.

A Week Passed

I didn’t tell Daniel immediately.

I didn’t make a dramatic announcement.

I didn’t post about it online.

I didn’t tell relatives.

I didn’t even tell my friends.

I simply waited.

A week later, I ran into my daughter.

She was standing outside a grocery store when she saw me.

“Mom?”

I smiled.

“Hi.”

She walked toward me.

But something about her expression was different.

She looked worried.

Then she said:

“Why did you stop paying Daniel’s tuition?”

My stomach dropped.

So she knew.

I took a breath.

“Because your son told me he’s embarrassed by me.”

Her expression changed.

“What?”

I explained what had happened.

The sweater.

The school.

The way Daniel had walked away.

The comment.

My daughter stared at me.

Then, to my surprise, she started crying.

I hadn’t expected that.
