Daniel was killed instantly in a car accident. The narrator was left with grief, anger, and the terrible knowledge that they would never have another conversation. After the funeral, his mother gave him an envelope containing a USB drive and a short note from Daniel that said, “I tried to tell you.”
When the narrator opened the files, he discovered a side of Claire he had never seen. Recordings revealed her mocking him behind his back, stealing money from their wedding savings, and discussing him as nothing more than temporary financial security until she could find someone wealthier.
The final recording was the most painful. Daniel appeared alone, exhausted, explaining that he had discovered Claire’s deception months earlier. He had tried repeatedly to warn his brother, but the narrator had interpreted his concerns as jealousy and refused to believe him.
