When I arrived, my mother was waiting beneath the porch light. I broke down in her arms and apologized. She simply held me and said that coming home was enough. I used her savings for community college, worked part-time, earned scholarships, and eventually built a life that allowed me to make sure she never needed another double shift.
Looking back, I understand that my mother had been giving me everything all along. Her love existed in packed lunches, tired smiles, folded clothes, sacrifices, and a childhood stuffed bear. I nearly traded the woman who had given me everything for a father offering expensive things. Thankfully, I opened that letter before it was too late.
