My daughter Chloe noticed too. “He runs on a Cinderella schedule,” she joked. I eventually asked Mom whether she had ever even seen Richard’s house. She admitted she hadn’t. When I warned her to be careful, she simply said, “Please let me have this. Even if it turns out badly, let me have the part where I still get to hope.”
Then came Mom’s 72nd birthday. Richard brought roses and stayed through dinner, but at 7:26 he checked his watch. Mom asked him to stay for dessert, but he apologized and left. Chloe watched him drive away, then suddenly grabbed her coat.
She returned forty minutes later carrying Richard’s leather bag. Inside were photographs, a small music box, and picture cards designed for someone who struggled with memory. Then Chloe showed us a note: “My name is Evelyn. Richard is my son.”
We discovered Richard had been leaving early to visit his 86-year-old mother in a memory-care facility. She had dementia, became frightened at night, and often forgot who he was. Richard had kept her condition private because a previous relationship ended when his partner couldn’t accept the responsibility.
