THE BOY WHO BROUGHT MY DAUGHTER HOME FROM PROM KNEW THE SECRET I HAD KEPT FOR FOURTEEN YEARS

Mom died when Lily was eleven.

Mark continued.

“After that, I tried through a lawyer again. Then I remarried. Life got complicated.”

Lily’s face hardened.

“So you started another family.”

Sarah flinched.

Mark answered carefully.

“I married Sarah. Noah was already ten.”

“No children together?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“That isn’t important tonight.”

Lily looked at Noah.

Then back at Mark.

“You got to be his stepdad.”

Mark’s face crumpled.

“Yes.”

“And not my dad.”

“Yes.”

That was the moment he started crying.

“I have no defense for how that feels.”

Lily cried too.

Not because they had reconciled.

Because sometimes hearing someone finally name the wound is almost as painful as receiving it.

She talked to Mark for nearly two hours.

Mostly in my living room.

Eventually, she asked the rest of us to leave.

I went into the kitchen.

Sarah followed me.

For several minutes, we stood in silence.

Then she said, “I knew about Lily.”

I looked at her.

“Since when?”

“Before Mark and I married.”

That hurt unexpectedly.

“What did he tell you?”

“That his ex-wife had primary custody and contact had broken down.”

“Did he say why?”

“He admitted both of you were angry.”

I laughed without humor.

“That’s diplomatic.”

Sarah nodded.

“He kept a box.”

My throat tightened.

“What box?”

“Copies of letters. Court records. Birthday cards he didn’t mail because he said he didn’t know whether sending them would help or reopen everything.”

I closed my eyes.

“He should have sent them.”

“Yes.”

She surprised me.

“I told him that.”
