THE BOY WHO BROUGHT MY DAUGHTER HOME FROM PROM KNEW THE SECRET I HAD KEPT FOR FOURTEEN YEARS

No reason.

Not yet.

Then she sent:

His name is Mark Bennett. Do you know him?

I stopped breathing.

My ex-husband’s name was Marcus Bennett.

Everyone except his mother called him Mark.

I sat at my kitchen table and read the message again.

For fourteen years, I had imagined every possible way Lily might eventually learn the truth.

I had never imagined this.

My hands shook so badly I mistyped twice.

Finally I wrote:

Come home. We’ll talk.

Her reply came immediately.

Mom?

I did not answer.

Because there are moments when a lie finally becomes too large to continue carrying, and instead of relief, all you feel is terror about what will happen when you put it down.

They arrived just after midnight.

Lily entered first.

She was still wearing her dress, but the joy had vanished from her face.

Noah followed.

He carried her heels in one hand.

Neither of them spoke at first.

“What happened?” I asked.

Lily looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“Noah’s stepdad came to the hotel.”

The prom had been held in a ballroom downtown.

I nodded.

“I know.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“How?”

“You texted me.”

“No. I mean why did he act like that?”

I held the edge of the kitchen counter.

“What did he do?”

“He stared at me.”

Noah answered this time.

“He asked her last name.”

Lily looked at him.
