“You knew the second I texted you.”
“Yes.”
“How long have you known he’s Noah’s stepdad?”
“I didn’t.”
That was the first thing I could say without shame.
“I swear I didn’t know.”
Lily stepped backward.
“But you knew where he was?”
“Not exactly.”
“Did you know he was alive?”
“Of course.”
She stared at me as though I had said something obscene.
“You talk about him like he disappeared.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Her voice cracked.
“You told me he didn’t want me.”
I swallowed.
“Lily—”
“Did he?”
I looked at Noah.
He quietly moved toward the doorway.
Lily stopped him.
“No. Stay.”
He did.
Then she looked at me again.
“Did he want me?”
“Yes.”
The word barely came out.
Her eyes filled.
“Then why did you tell me he didn’t?”
