“I’m sorry I said I’d cut you out,” she told me one night, sitting cross-legged on my kitchen floor while I reorganized a cabinet that didn’t actually need reorganizing. “I meant it when I said it. That’s the part that scares me most, looking back.”
“You were in love,” I said. “People say things they mean in the moment and don’t mean anymore once the moment’s over. I understand that better than almost anyone.”

Eleanor Voss reached out to Camille about two months later, having heard through the annulment filing that another woman in the family had nearly walked the same road she had. They met for coffee. I wasn’t there, but Camille told me afterward that Eleanor had cried through most of it, relieved, she said, that someone had finally caught him before he’d taken everything.
“She said he took almost sixty thousand dollars from her before the lawsuit,” Camille told me. “Said it took her almost two years to feel like herself again afterward.”
“And you caught it in one night,” I said. “Because your brother wouldn’t let it go.”
“Because you both wouldn’t let it go,” Camille corrected me. “I know I made that hard for you. The ultimatum, all of it.”
“You did,” I agreed. “But I’d rather have a daughter who’s angry at me for telling her the truth than a daughter who never finds out at all.”

Arthur left Willowmere entirely by the end of that year, according to the last update Ethan managed to track down — a new city, presumably a new version of the same story waiting to be told to someone who hadn’t yet learned to ask the right questions.
I don’t know if he ever will be stopped for good. I only know that this time, in this particular corner of his pattern, someone finally was.
Camille started dating again eventually, slowly, carefully, and the first thing she does now with anyone new, she told me recently, half-laughing and half-serious, is ask Ethan to run a background check before she lets herself get too attached.
“Overkill?” she asked me.
“Given everything,” I said, “I think it’s just called being thorough.”
