Dad at a dining table.
I saw those pictures.
I had called the facility once.
Melissa said Dad’s speech was too poor for phone conversations.
She told me visits upset him.
She said the doctor recommended limiting stimulation.
I believed her.
Now my father was lying on a mattress supported by concrete blocks.
Hannah was feeding him soup.
My knees nearly gave way.
I stepped inside.
“Dad.”
Walter turned his head.
His eyes widened.
Then he began crying.
He tried to speak.
Only broken sounds came out.
I rushed toward him.
“Dad.”
He grabbed my wrist.
His good hand was surprisingly strong.
“I’m here.”
“What happened?”
I looked at Hannah.
Panic became anger.
Old instinct.
Old mistake.
“What did you do to him?”
Hannah stared at me.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she laughed.
Dry.
Exhausted.
“You are still throwing accusations before bothering to ask questions.”
I stepped closer.
“Why is he here?”
She opened a drawer.
Pulled out papers.
Dropped them onto a small table.
“Read.”
I picked up the first.
Hospital discharge form.
Walter Carter.
Stroke.
Severe mobility impairment.
Speech deficits.
Recommended skilled nursing care.
Then another line.
Family representative declined continued placement.
Requested discharge.
My eyes moved lower.
Signature.
Melissa Carter.
My hands shook.
“This cannot be real.”
Hannah folded her arms.
“It is.”
“Melissa sends me videos from Silver Pines every week.”
“She sends you old videos.”
I stared.
“What?”
“Your father stayed there for nineteen days.”
“Then she removed him.”
I looked at Dad.
He shook his head rapidly.
Tears ran down his face.
Hannah continued.
“She stopped paying.”
“She took his debit card.”
“His wallet.”
“His phone.”
“Then she dropped him at County General after midnight.”
I felt sick.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Why would she do that?”
Hannah looked at Walter.
Then at me.
“Because your father had started understanding what she did.”
“What did she do?”
Silence.
Hannah stepped closer.
“And if you think abandoning him is monstrous, you still don’t know why he ended up like this.”
My father made a sound.
Urgent.
He pointed toward the drawer.
