“Then Eleanor called a police officer incompetent.”
I closed my eyes.
“Of course.”
“They’ve both been trespassed from the property.”
I smiled.
“Excellent.”
The neurologist entered a few minutes later.
Dr. Patel.
She had kind eyes and the ability to say terrifying things without sounding frightening.
She tested my reflexes.
Then sensation.
“Do you feel this?”
A light touch near my ankle.
I concentrated.
Nothing.
“Not really.”
She moved higher.
“How about here?”
“Pressure.”
“Good.”
“Good?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Yesterday you had no response.”
My heart jumped.
“So I’m improving?”
“It’s early.”
She did not promise.
“But this is encouraging.”
I looked at Sarah.
She smiled.
The doctor continued.
“Recovery from spinal hematoma varies.”
“I understand.”
“You may regain function gradually.”
