My husband brought his mistress into my hospital room hours after I gave birth. His mother sl.apped me so hard my newborn woke crying, then sneered, “Who will believe a paralyzed woman?”

He approached the table carrying a wrapped present.

Hazel screamed.

“Daddy.”

Then ran toward him.

Julian crouched.

He hugged her.

I watched from a distance.

There had been a time when seeing that would have made me angry.

Now I only watched carefully.

Hazel loved him.

That mattered.

Her safety mattered more.

Both truths could exist.

Sarah stood beside me holding lemonade.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

She looked toward Julian.

“He’s behaving.”

“He learned.”

“Expensive lesson.”

I laughed.

“Very.”

Sarah looked around the lake.

“Ever think about selling this place?”

“No.”

“Because of what happened?”

“Because my father taught me to swim here.”

She nodded.

“Fair.”

Hazel ran back toward me.

She grabbed my dress.

“Mommy.”

“What?”

“Cake.”

“Soon.”

“Now.”

“Soon.”

“Now.”

Sarah smiled.

“She has your negotiating style.”

“No.”

“She has Julian’s patience.”

We both laughed.

PART 15

That night, after everyone left, I sat on the dock with Hazel asleep against my chest.

The lake was quiet.

The house behind us glowed with warm lights.

I thought about the hospital.

The slap.

The recording.

The papers.

The bassinet being rolled away.

For a long time, those memories had haunted me.

Now they felt farther away.

Not gone.

Just smaller.

I looked down at Hazel.

She was the only part of that day I wanted to keep forever.

Everything else had been stripped away.

The marriage.

The illusion.

The fear.

Even the paralysis.

I had survived all of it.
