“Yes.”
“The recommendation from Stanford Professor Klein?”
I hesitated.
His eyes narrowed.
“You bought that too?”
“I made a donation.”
Carter leaned back.
He looked devastated.
“Was anything mine?”
That question nearly broke me.
“Your effort was yours.”
“What effort?”
He laughed again.
“I barely studied.”
I said nothing.
“I knew Mom would fix it.”
His voice dropped.
“And I knew you would pay.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Why?”
“Because I confused giving you advantages with preparing you for life.”
He stared at his hands.
“They’re incredible.”
“Who?”
He gave me a look.
“The twins.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“I hate them.”
