At sixty-two, I spent the night with a man twenty-eight years younger than me. I did it because I was tired of being invisible—and because, for once, I wanted passion. But when I woke up alone in the hotel room the next morning, I discovered something terrifying.

I still remember the warmth of the hotel bar and the way it felt to be noticed again.

But I no longer blame myself for wanting passion.

Loneliness can make a false smile look sincere.

It can make attention feel like love.

But needing tenderness does not make a woman foolish.

Growing older does not mean she stops wanting to be seen, touched, or desired.

And when someone uses those needs against her, the shame belongs only to them.

Never to her.
