She glanced toward the basement door.
“Mom made me promise I wouldn’t tell you while she was alive.”
My stomach tightened.
“Tell me what?”
Naomi didn’t answer.
She walked downstairs.
I followed.
In the far corner of the basement stood an old green metal safe that had belonged to my grandfather.
I had seen it hundreds of times.
Mom always claimed it contained tax documents and old insurance policies.
Naomi crouched in front of it and entered six numbers.
The lock clicked.
I stared at her.
“You know the combination?”
“She gave it to me three years ago.”
That was my first betrayal of the night.
Inside were folders, envelopes, photographs and a small wooden box.
Naomi pulled out a thick brown envelope.
My name was written across the front.
HARPER.
In my mother’s handwriting.
“Open it,” Naomi said.
Inside was a birth certificate.
