When my sister died, grief did not give me time to stop. Her children still needed breakfast, clean clothes, help with homework,

bedtime stories, and someone to remind them that tomorrow would come. I already had my son, Harry, and suddenly Selena and Mika became part of my everyday life too.

It was not easy. There were long workdays, tight budgets, forgotten school projects, and plenty of nights when I cried quietly

after the children were asleep. But somewhere along the way, we stopped feeling like a household held together by circumstances.

We became a family.

Romance was not something I was searching for when I met Oliver.

He was patient and kind. He never seemed bothered by the fact that I came with three children and a complicated life.

He helped Harry with homework, listened to Selena’s stories, and played games with Mika. He seemed to understand that being with me meant becoming part of something bigger than a relationship between two adults.

On one of our early dates, I told him plainly, “My children come first. Always.”

He smiled.
