By 2019, Abrigo HOPE was caring for more than 60 dogs, demonstrating how a relatively simple concept could address two difficult challenges at the same time.

For the animals, the shelter offers safety and a chance to recover before the next chapter of their lives.

For the workers, it offers something equally important: income, responsibility, dignity and an opportunity to demonstrate what they are capable of doing.

Programs like this also challenge a common assumption about homelessness.

People without stable housing are sometimes treated primarily as individuals who need to be managed, relocated or rescued. Abrigo HOPE takes a different approach by giving participants a meaningful role in helping others.

They are not simply receiving assistance.

They are becoming caregivers themselves.

And that distinction matters.

A paycheck can provide immediate financial help. Training can create future opportunities. But being trusted with responsibility can also restore something that poverty and homelessness often strip away: the feeling that your contribution matters.
