“Then what’s wrong?”
She hesitated.
“There is something on the ultrasound that I wasn’t expecting.”
My hands became cold.
“What?”
She turned the monitor slightly toward herself.
“I want to repeat the scan.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to alarm you until I’m certain.”
My heart pounded.
“Doctor, please. Tell me what’s happening.”
She looked at me with an expression I’d never seen before.
It wasn’t fear.
It was confusion.
And something else.
Concern.
She repeated the scan.
Then she checked my dates again.
She looked at the screen.
Then at me.
Then back at the screen.
Finally, she said something that made my entire world tilt.
“Laura…”
“Yes?”
“Your pregnancy is not two months old.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She pointed toward the screen.
“The baby is much further along than that.”
My mouth went dry.
“That can’t be.”
“It can.”
“But I only found out recently.”
“That doesn’t mean you became pregnant recently.”
I couldn’t breathe.
The room seemed to shrink around me.
Dr. Salinas continued examining the ultrasound.
Then she stopped again.
This time, her face changed completely.
“There’s another issue.”
My voice barely came out.
“What issue?”
She zoomed in.
I looked at the screen, but I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.
“Doctor…”
She took a breath.
“I need to verify something before I tell you.”
“Verify what?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she asked a nurse to bring her another file.
The nurse returned a few minutes later.
Dr. Salinas compared the ultrasound images with the information in the file.
Her eyes widened.
Then she looked at me.
“Laura, did Diego have any medical procedure before the vasectomy?”
“No.”
