“What?”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
The person on the other end continued speaking.
Dr. Salinas stood completely still.
Then she slowly lowered the phone.
“Laura…”
“Yes?”
“The clinic has just confirmed something.”
“What?”
She swallowed.
“They don’t have Diego’s name under the vasectomy procedure.”
I stared at her.
“That can’t be.”
“They checked twice.”
“But I drove him there.”
“I believe you.”
“Then who had the surgery?”
Dr. Salinas didn’t answer immediately.
Her eyes moved toward my stomach.
Then back to me.
“That’s exactly what we’re trying to find out.”
I felt the room spinning.
And for the first time since seeing those two pink lines, I realized something terrifying:
