While helping Maggie wash her hair, I noticed a crescent-shaped birthmark on her shoulder. My hands began trembling because my mother had the exact same mark. My mother had disappeared after a house fire when I was ten, and our family had always believed she had died.
I hurried to my bedroom and returned with an old photograph of my mother. Maggie stared at it for several seconds before touching her shoulder. She also had a small scar beneath her chin, another feature I remembered from childhood.
