Opening the trash can and finding tiny white larvae can be unpleasant, but there is usually a simple explanation. Maggots are the larval stage of flies, and household garbage can provide the warmth, moisture, and organic material they need to develop. Food scraps, leftover meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, greasy paper towels, and food-covered packaging can produce odors that attract flies. Once flies reach the waste, they may lay eggs, which can develop quickly in warm conditions. This is why a trash can can appear normal one day and suddenly contain maggots soon afterward.
Warm weather can make the problem more noticeable because garbage containers in kitchens, garages, or direct sunlight may become significantly warmer. Moisture combined with food residue creates an especially suitable environment for flies. If maggots appear, begin by carefully removing the garbage responsible for the problem. Tie the bag securely and take it to the appropriate outdoor waste area. Keep children and pets away from the area during cleanup. Afterward, empty the container completely and wash it thoroughly with warm or hot water and dish soap or another suitable household detergent. Pay attention to the bottom, interior walls, lid, handles, and any areas where food or liquid may have collected.
