“Julian Sterling. I’m an attorney. I’m not here to sue you, Mr. Vance — that comes later, and it won’t be me, it’ll be the state. I’m here as a courtesy, so that everyone in this room understands their legal position before they say something they can’t take back on the record.”
He turned to the fifty frozen guests.
“Several of you are Vance business partners. You’ll want to consult your own counsel about the contracts you co-signed. That’s not a threat. It’s a kindness.”
Then Marcus opened the thick folder, and the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.
“Marcus Sterling. Forensic accounting.
Over the past three weeks, I’ve assembled documentation of bid-rigging, kickbacks, and inflated change-orders across eleven municipal contracts held by Vance Construction.
Schools. A bridge. A hospital wing.
Public money, Mr. Vance.
You didn’t just steal from investors who can afford it. You stole from a hospital.”
The word hospital moved through the crowd like a current.
These were high-society people.
They could forgive an affair.
They could forgive arrogance.
They could not be seen anywhere near a man who skimmed a children’s hospital wing, and I watched, in real time, fifty people begin to calculate the distance between themselves and the Vance family.
“That’s fabricated,” Arthur said, but his voice had lost its foundation. “You can’t prove—”
“It’s already filed,” Caleb said quietly, from the corner. “As of forty minutes ago. When the gates closed. Copies are with the state attorney’s office, the FBI’s public corruption unit, and — because I’m thorough — three newspapers.
We didn’t come to negotiate, Mr. Vance.
We came so my sister could watch your face.”
Isaac finally found his voice, and of course, it was aimed at me.
“You did this,” he snarled, stepping toward me. “You ungrateful — after everything this family gave you—”
Noah moved between us, not fast, just inevitable, like a wall deciding to be somewhere.
“You made her kneel,” Noah said, very softly, “in front of fifty people. On her birthday. Because of a dress.”
He let that sit.
“My sister called us and said, ‘Make his family beg.’ Do you know what we said to each other in the car, Isaac?
We said she was being generous.
