I looked down at the tiny baby sleeping inside the blanket.
“She was born five hours ago, Michael. I would already go to the ends of the earth for her.”
The next two days felt like weeks.
Doctors took blood samples from Lily, examined her heart and brain, and finally returned with the results.
They had indeed detected the genetic variant associated with the rare inherited disorder.
Michael dropped into a chair and covered his face with his hands.
But the doctor wasn’t finished.
“This does not mean her story will be the same as Grace’s.”
Over the decades, treatment and monitoring of the condition had improved dramatically. Lily would need regular medical checkups, but at that moment, the doctors saw no signs of serious complications.
Michael barely spoke that night.
