PART 2
Seventeen missed calls from a Canadian number were glowing on my screen.
There was also an email that had arrived while I was on the flight home.
I opened it slowly.
“You’re right,” I told Vivian. “Coming in here yelling won’t fix anything.”
Her shoulders loosened.
Derek stopped looking quite so nervous.
I could almost see them convincing themselves that I was calming down.
That I was still the same son who would swallow his anger, send money, and trust whatever explanation they gave me.
“Actually,” I continued, “I have some news I was planning to tell everyone tomorrow.”
My mother’s eyes immediately moved toward my phone.
“What news?”
I looked at Clara.
She was still holding my shirt with both hands, barely able to stand.
Then I looked back at my family.
“The plant in Calgary settled a workplace case.”
Derek frowned.
“What kind of settlement?”
I waited just long enough.
Then I said:
“A little over one million dollars.”
Silence.
Vivian’s entire expression changed.
The woman who had just been telling me my sick wife deserved what happened to her suddenly stepped closer.
“A million?”
