“You didn’t even know me. Why did you help me?”
For a moment, I couldn’t answer.
Then I said quietly,
“Because when I was nineteen, I wish someone had opened a door for me too.”
That night changed everything.
I never saw another client again.
It wasn’t easy.
I had very little savings, and I had almost no experience doing any other kind of work.
But Linda helped me contact the same support center.
A few months later, I was working there myself.
At first, I answered phone calls and accompanied women to appointments.
Later, I began speaking to women who were convinced it was already too late for them to change their lives.
I knew exactly how that felt.
And Emma?
She went back to school.
Two years later, she sent me a photograph from her graduation.
Underneath it, she had written only one sentence:
“That night, you didn’t just let me into your home. You gave me my future back.”
I stared at that message for a long time.
Then I finally understood something.
Emma wasn’t the only person whose life had changed that night.
I had opened the door for her.
But without realizing it, I had also opened the door to my own new life.
