A week later, Ben found a few apples still hanging high in the trees. Together, we picked them and baked Daniel’s favorite apple pie. Then we carried it next door. I told Monica that I didn’t forgive her actions, but Luke was Daniel’s son and Ben’s brother. We had all lost enough.
Monica accepted the pie through tears, and Luke stood quietly behind her. As I looked at him, something in his face reminded me of Daniel. For the first time, I stopped seeing him as Monica’s son.
