My mother-in-law used to show up at every barbecue with her whole family to eat free at our house. When she showed up empty-handed on the Fourth of July, I decided to teach her a lesson she’d never forget.

Juliette came down first, with a huge hat and posing as a VIP guest. Sarah and Kate followed her, with designer bags… and nothing else. The six children then invaded the garden.

—Yes! I hope everything is ready. We’re starving.

—Almost everything.

The table was beautiful. Wildflowers, cloth napkins and freshly made lemonade.

“You always leave everything in order,” Sarah said.

“Where is the food?” He asked Kate.

I went to the kitchen and came back with a tray.

Cucumber sandwiches.

No crust. Cut into small and perfect triangles.

And a teapot with hot black tea.

The silence was absolute.
