When the box accidentally fell and broke open on the first anniversary of Sophie’s disappearance, Elena discovered evidence that transformed her grief into horror. Her daughter was alive, and Mark had knowingly kept them apart.
A Saturday Tradition Between Father and Daughter
Sophie was an energetic child known for scraped knees, a loose ponytail, and a fierce determination that appeared in nearly everything she attempted.
Fishing was one of the few activities that required her to become completely still. She shared the hobby with Mark, who took her to the old lake almost every Saturday.
Elena usually remained at home while the pair prepared their equipment, packed a thermos, and drove away for the day.
When they returned, Sophie often told dramatic stories about enormous fish she had supposedly caught and released. The trips created a private bond between father and daughter.
Elena admired their closeness, although she sometimes felt as though she stood just outside an important part of Sophie’s life.
Nothing about their final Saturday morning appeared unusual.
Mark Returns Home Alone
Sophie kissed Elena on the cheek, collected the thermos, and followed her father into the garage.
She was cheerful and full of energy when she left. Elena had no reason to believe it would be the last time she would see her daughter for an entire year.
By noon, Mark returned alone.
