My daughter, Emily, moved to South Korea for work a few years ago.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s where she fell in love with a man named Joon, and not long afterward, they got\u00a0married<\/span>.<\/p>\n Joon always spoke English with me.<\/p>\n When we first met, I thought he was wonderful.<\/p>\n He was kind to Emily, attentive, and caring.<\/p>\n I was happy for my daughter.<\/p>\n Then, a few years after their wedding, I decided to visit Emily.<\/p>\n I missed her Korean, turned red as a tomato, and began speaking to Joon in a slightly raised voice.<\/p>\n They spoke freely, clearly assuming that I DIDN\u2019T UNDERSTAND Korean.<\/p>\n But the thing was, I\u2019d started learning Korean after Emily got married.<\/p>\n I hadn\u2019t told anyone about it yet.<\/p>\n I\u2019d simply been studying it quietly.<\/p>\n And then I froze in the doorway when I heard WHAT Young-ho was saying to his son.<\/p>\n Young-ho (in Korean):<\/p>\n \u201cOh my God, how much longer are you going to hide this from Emily?<\/p>\n You DON\u2019T deserve her.<\/p>\n You\u2019re DISGRACING our family.\u201d<\/p>\n Joon:<\/p>\n \u201cStay out of it.<\/p>\n You know WHY I married her.<\/p>\n You know exactly WHAT I need.<\/p>\n And no one can ever find out.\u201d<\/p>\n Young-ho:<\/p>\n \u201cIf Emily or her mother finds out what you\u2019ve done, you\u2019re going to be in serious trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n Joon:<\/p>\n \u201cYes, they\u2019ll hate me.<\/p>\n I know that I\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n When I heard the REST of Joon\u2019s conversation with his father, my knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n I felt so sick that I rushed outside with my phone in my hand, still wearing my slippers, so I could call Emily IMMEDIATELY.<\/p>\n My hands were shaking so badly I could barely dial Emily\u2019s number.<\/p>\n She didn\u2019t pick up.<\/p>\n Of course she didn\u2019t \u2014 she was still at work.<\/p>\n I stood there on the pavement in my slippers, heart pounding, replaying every word I\u2019d just heard.<\/p>\n *\u201dYou know WHY I married her.<\/p>\n You know exactly WHAT I need.\u201d*<\/p>\n What did that mean?<\/p>\n What could he possibly need from my daughter?<\/p>\n I forced myself to go back inside.<\/p>\n I had to act normal.<\/p>\n I had to.<\/p>\n Joon looked up when I walked in and smiled at me \u2014 that same warm smile I\u2019d always trusted.<\/p>\n \u201cEverything okay?\u201d he asked in English.<\/p>\n
