I stared at the phone.
His mother said something I couldn’t hear clearly.
Oliver continued.
“She’s very protective because of the kids. That’s what makes this easier.”
My heart began beating faster.
Then he mentioned my house and savings.
He spoke as though marriage would give him an opportunity to gain control over things I had spent years building for my family.
And then he said something about the children that I will never forget.
He complained that he was tired of pretending to care about them.
I ended the call.
For several minutes, I simply stood there.
I did not know what hurt more: hearing that Oliver had been dishonest with me or realizing that the children had trusted someone who did not feel the same way about them.
I walked into the living room.
Harry was asleep on the couch.
Selena and Mika were curled together under a blanket.
I looked at them and felt something inside me become completely clear.
I was not going to marry Oliver.
But I also knew that confronting him immediately might allow him to deny everything.
I needed to protect my family first.
Before I could decide what to do, my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from Chelsea, Oliver’s teenage niece.
She told me she had overheard Oliver and his mother talking earlier. She had recorded part of the conversation because she believed I deserved to know the truth.
She sent me the recording.
I listened.
There was no misunderstanding.
Oliver talked about the same things I had heard through the FaceTime call. He discussed my finances, my home, and how he believed marriage would make it easier for him to influence my decisions.
Chelsea sounded nervous when I called her.
“I didn’t know what else to do,” she said.
“You did the right thing,” I told her.
I thanked her and promised that I would protect her privacy.
Then I made several calls.
First, I contacted the person helping with our wedding arrangements and explained that the ceremony would not be taking place as planned.
Next, I contacted my cousin Danny, who had helped me organize the financial protections I had established for the children.
I asked him to review everything.
He assured me that the property and designated savings had protections in place for the children.
Oliver had apparently assumed that marriage would give him access to assets that were not actually available to him.
