What Really Happens When You Sleep on Your Right Side? Here’s What to Know

This happens partly because of the stomach’s natural shape and how gravity affects it when you lie down. In certain positions, stomach contents may move more easily toward the esophagus, increasing the chance of reflux.

On the other hand, sleeping on the left side may help keep stomach contents lower, which can reduce the likelihood of acid moving upward. Some research suggests that this position may lead to less acid exposure during the night.

However, this does not mean the right side is harmful for everyone. Many people sleep on their right side without any issues, and personal comfort still plays an important role in choosing a position.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, often causing a burning sensation in the chest, a sour taste, or discomfort after eating. These symptoms can vary depending on habits and lifestyle.

Eating large meals late at night, consuming certain foods or drinks, and lying down soon after eating may increase the chances of experiencing reflux symptoms during sleep.
