“You make them comfortable.”
Rebecca added, “Comfortable people talk.”
Daniel closed hiseyes.
When he opened them again, something in him had changed.
He called Jenna.
I listened from across the room.
“Hey,” he said softly.
She answered immediately.
I could hear her crying through the speaker.
“Daniel, please let me explain.”
“I know about you and Dad.”
Silence.
Then sobbing.
“I’m so sorry.”
Daniel looked at me.
I nodded.
He continued.
“I don’t know what happens next. But I don’t want screaming. I don’t want police. I don’t want Mom destroyed.”
Jenna whispered, “I never wanted to hurt you.”
Daniel’s face hardened, but his voice remained gentle.
“I believe you.”
I watched my son lie to his wife with terrifying perfection.
By Saturday, the plan was set.
Family dinner at my house.
Mark thought Daniel wanted reconciliation.
Jenna believed she could convince him the affair had been “a terrible mistake.”
