She treated everyone with kindness.
When she brought my coffee to the table, she noticed the untouched slice of cake sitting beside me.
“Not hungry?” she asked.
“I’ve had a long week.”
She smiled knowingly.
“Haven’t we all?”
It wasn’t a rehearsed conversation.
She wasn’t trying to impress me.
She simply seemed interested.
Over the next several weeks, I kept returning.
Sometimes for coffee.
Sometimes for breakfast.
Sometimes with no real excuse at all.
Her name was Emma.
She worked six days a week to help support her grandmother after her parents had died years earlier.
She lived in a modest apartment.
She owned very little.
Yet she seemed happier than almost anyone I’d ever met.
An Impossible Proposal

“My parents are trying to control my entire life.”
She listened quietly.
“I need to get married.”
Her eyebrows lifted.
I quickly added, “Not because I don’t respect marriage.”
