There were professionally framed photographs.
There was a handmade quilt.
There was even a restored motorcycle helmet that had belonged to someone’s grandfather.
And with every gift, my stomach tightened.
Because I kept thinking about Ethan.
I hated myself for it.
But I couldn’t stop.
What if he’d made something that looked childish?
What if the room became uncomfortably quiet?
What if somebody whispered?
What if Ethan noticed?
What if he didn’t notice and I did?
By the time the principal reached the B’s, my palms were damp.
“Claire Bennett.”
Applause.
I stood.
The principal smiled.
“Claire will be attending Georgetown University this fall, where she plans to study political science.”
More applause.
My face burned.
Then he continued.
“And presenting Claire’s family gift tonight is her younger brother, Ethan.”
I turned.
Ethan walked onto the stage carrying a large wooden case against his chest.
I had never seen it before.
