I had not arrived with a revenge plan.
I did not secretly engineer humiliation.
I did not buy the house because I wanted Vanessa to suffer.
I bought it because I saw a porch.
A small lawn.
A good kitchen.
A place where I could breathe.
The fact that it stood directly across the street was funny.
Very funny.
But still secondary.
The real victory was not watching Vanessa discover I had money.
It was realizing I did not need permission to leave a situation where I was being treated poorly.
That lesson applies whether you have four hundred dollars or four million.
Money gave me options.
But self-respect made me use them.
Those are different things.
People sometimes hear the story and say.
“You should have told Ethan everything earlier.”
Maybe.
I agree more now than I did then.
Secrecy has consequences too.
I wanted my son to become independent.
