Even when the surface appears peaceful, conditions can change.

Currents shift.

Waves change.

Visibility can be poor.

Marine animals move according to environmental conditions.

And hazards can appear without warning.

That’s why beach safety isn’t only about knowing how to swim.

It’s also about knowing when not to swim.

A strong swimmer can still be stung.

An experienced beachgoer can still encounter dangerous wildlife.

A child who has spent years swimming can still make a poor decision.

Skill reduces certain risks.

It doesn’t eliminate them.

Don’t Confuse the Purple Flag With a Shark Warning

Another common misunderstanding involves sharks.

People sometimes see a purple warning and immediately assume a shark has been spotted.

That isn’t necessarily true.

A purple flag is generally associated with dangerous marine life, and the exact animal or hazard can vary.

A beach authority may use a different warning or announcement for a confirmed shark sighting.
