A single jellyfish can drift close to shore.

Other marine animals can be carried into swimming areas by tides or changing conditions.

Lifeguards are trained to watch for these risks and respond when necessary.

If they suddenly tell people to stay out of the water, it’s usually not something worth debating from the shoreline.

You may not know what they’ve seen.

You may not know what another swimmer has reported.

And you may not know whether the danger is temporary or likely to spread along the beach.

The Purple Flag Doesn’t Necessarily Mean the Beach Is Closing

Another common misunderstanding is that a purple flag automatically means nobody can remain on the beach.

Not necessarily.

Depending on the local warning system, the flag may specifically concern entering the water, rather than being on the sand.

That distinction matters.

A family might still be allowed to sit on the beach, walk along the shoreline, or enjoy the area while swimming is prohibited.
