Don’t attempt to swim farther away from shore simply because you think the danger might be closer to the beach.
Follow the directions provided by the people responsible for beach safety.
If you’re on the sand with children, keep them away from the water until the lifeguards say it’s safe.
Don’t assume that because another person ignores the warning, you should ignore it too.
And don’t pick up unfamiliar marine animals that have washed onto the beach.
Even animals that appear dead can sometimes pose a hazard.
Don’t Touch Strange Things on the Sand
This is an especially important lesson for children.
Kids naturally want to investigate things they find at the beach.
They may see a strange transparent blob, a colorful creature, or something that looks like a piece of plastic.
They may want to touch it.
Parents should discourage that.
If you don’t know what something is, don’t handle it.
