The investigation lasted nearly two years.
Mueller’s final report found numerous contacts between Trump campaign figures and individuals connected to Russia, but it did not establish that the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.
The investigation nevertheless contributed to years of political conflict.
Trump repeatedly described the investigation as a politically motivated attack.
His opponents argued that the investigation exposed serious concerns about foreign interference and presidential conduct.
The issue became one of many controversies surrounding his presidency.
Impeachment
Trump became the third U.S. president to be impeached by the House of Representatives when lawmakers voted in December 2019.
The first impeachment centered on Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.
The House accused him of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Trump denied wrongdoing.
In February 2020, the Republican-controlled Senate acquitted him on both articles of impeachment.
But impeachment did not end the controversy.
