Why Some People Put Salt in the Toilet: The Simple Household Trick Behind the Plumber’s “Secret”
The plumber had barely finished looking at the bathroom when he asked an unexpected question.
“Do you have any salt?”
I assumed he meant something completely unrelated to the toilet.
“Salt?” I asked.
He nodded.
Then, before I could ask why, he took a small amount and poured it into the toilet bowl.
I stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
He smiled and continued working.
When I asked whether the salt was supposed to fix something, he gave me a vague answer about an old household trick that some people use for toilet maintenance.
Then came the line that made the whole thing sound mysterious:
“That’s a plumber’s secret.”
Of course, that only made me more curious.
Why would anyone put salt in a toilet?
Could something as ordinary as table salt actually help keep a toilet clean? Could it prevent odors? Could it help with minor buildup?
