The mystery is much more harmless.
It is basically geography mixed with humor and personal expression.
Why State Stickers Became So Popular
State-outline decals became popular partly because they allow people to communicate something personal without using words.
A giant slogan can tell everyone exactly what the owner thinks.
A simple state outline is much quieter.
It might mean:
“This is where I’m from.”
“This is where I live.”
“This is where I met my spouse.”
“This is where my family is.”
“This place is special to me.”
Or simply:
“I like this state.”
That simplicity makes state outlines adaptable.
They appear on vehicles, windows, laptops, water bottles, coolers and outdoor equipment.
Washington’s distinctive shape makes it particularly suitable for this type of minimalist design.
Why the Upside-Down Version Is More Interesting
A regular state outline gives you the answer immediately.
An upside-down one creates a puzzle.
