“Why?”
“Because this isn’t normal. You really need to get checked.”
I laughed.
“Sarah, I’m eighty years old! What on earth do you think could be happening to me?”
But three nights later, I woke up to a sensation I hadn’t experienced in more than fifty years.
It felt as though something was moving inside my belly.
I froze.
Slowly, I placed my hand on my stomach.
A few seconds later, I felt the movement again.
The next morning, I asked my son to take me to the hospital.
The doctor was a woman in her early forties.
She examined me, asked several questions, and sent me for an ultrasound.
At first, everything seemed normal.
Then she suddenly fell silent.
She was studying something on the screen.
The smile disappeared from her face.
“Mrs. Margaret, could you tell me when you were last pregnant?”I burst out laughing.
