Historians will examine his administration’s policies, his judicial appointments, his economic record, his foreign policy, his handling of immigration, the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 election, January 6, his return to office, and the broader political movement that developed around him.
They will also examine the changes he brought to the Republican Party.
That transformation may prove to be one of his most significant long-term effects.
More Than a Political Personality
Donald Trump is often discussed as a personality.
That is understandable.
His style is distinctive.
His vocabulary is recognizable.
His public appearances frequently generate headlines.
But reducing his story to personality alone misses the larger picture.
His career reflects major changes in American society.
It illustrates the growing influence of celebrity culture.
It demonstrates the power of branding.
It reveals the declining importance of traditional political gatekeepers.
It shows how social media can transform presidential communication.
And it highlights the enormous political influence of voters who believe established institutions have failed to represent them.
